Grow Family Wage Jobs · Good Governance, Accountability & Transparency · Green the Port!

The top goal of the Port is to create stable living wage jobs for the region, where more than one third of local jobs are tied to international trade. We must also protect our working waterfront from the wrong kind of development. All those stacks containers you see bring jobs to our region, our iconic Pacific fishing fleet employs thousands, the cruise terminal draws nearly a million passengers annually into our local economy, and Sea-Tac continues to grow into a world-class gateway for our region.

We must both foster and protect the Port's economy but also our environment. In fact, we must lead on the environment at the Port. In Seattle, I passed an ordinance—one of the first in the country-  to require the city to assess climate impacts on most major construction projects. As we look forward to the future, the Port of Seattle must be a world leader in reducing emissions, restoring shorelines and limiting noise.

I served for three terms as a member of the Seattle City Council from 1997-2007, including serving as Council President. There, I led Seattle’s efforts on inclusive neighborhood planning, transportation solutions, the environment, and the crisis in affordable housing homelessness. I have worked for over two decades with governments across our region  to help improve inter-governmental relations and build a sustainable, environmentally friendly region.
